MIDWEST CONSORTIUM FOR LATINO RESEARCH (MCLR)
The Latino and Latin American Studies program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln was developed in the 1960s. Students who pursue this program will gain an understanding of the cultures of Latin America and in addition are expected to become proficient in either Spanish or Portuguese.
Students who major in Latin American Studies are required to complete 33 or more credit hours in that area, with at least 9 hours in Spanish beyond the basic university requirements for a bachelors degree. You will also take courses on Latin America in at least 3 different departments, such as History, Economics, Political Science, Geography, or Anthropology, plus a senior-level seminar. You will work closely with faculty at UN-L whose research has involved them in Latin American languages, culture, and landscapes. A minor is required and may be taken in any field. Minors in Latin American Studies and Chicano studies are also available.
If you wish to study abroad, you will be able to receive full credit at UN-L when you are enrolled for one or more semesters in programs in Monterrey, Mexico, or in Costa Rica. Closer to home, you may wish to get involved with the Mexican American Student Association (MASA) and Lincoln's Hispanic Community Center.
If you declare a major or minor in Latin American Studies you will find opportunities for employment in U.S. banks and commercial firms that have offices in Latin American countries, the travel industry (agencies, hotels, airlines), publishing companies, research organizations, and U.S. governmental agencies.
